Our impact

Water4Life makes a lasting, measurable impact on the watershed of Lake Atitlán and its surrounding communities. Our approach is unique in how it intertwines ecological restoration with social justice, recognizing that healthy waters reflect healthy systems, both ecologically and economically. We combine nature based solutions with community centered practices, guided by the leadership of local women whose deep, generational knowledge of environmental stewardship shapes every step of our work.

We are on a mission to …

empower communities to take action. Filter delivery. Education. Women empowerment
Access to clean water. Goal.

contributing to the following SDGs …

01. Empower communities to take action

We embed women’s leadership at every stage: from community assessments, outreach in schools to educative sessions in their communities around water, health, nutrition, and the environment.
By investing in their professional training we empower them to shape how initiatives are implemented and sustained over time.

Volunteers and community residents play a critical role in supporting our programs by strengthening our organizational capacity while ensuring that implementation remains community-led.

Each month, volunteers gather during our “Water Wednesday” event and collect waste around Lake Atitlán to reduce its pollution.

02. Reduce water contamination

We directly target one of the watershed’s most critical threats: untreated household greywater.

In 2024, we designed and built the Tzanjomel Greywater Treatment Plant, the first phytoremediation system in the region treating household greywater before it enters streams, reducing pollutants, preventing toxic cyanobacteria blooms and lowering waterborne health risks.

03. Increase access to clean water

We distributing water filters as an immediate, affordable solution to give families access to clean water.

“I don’t have to buy water plastic bottles for my family since we have the filter at home.”

Maria G.

Using GIS technology, we map rural communities to track water access and contamination, enabling transparent progress monitoring.

Regular home visits assess the adoption and effectiveness of filtration systems, while community meetings validate findings and adapt solutions.
