The world’s ecosystems are under severe threat from ecological disruption and water contamination.
We collaborate with communities in Guatemala to cultivate social and environmental health.
Through empowerment, education and accessible water solutions, we co-create sustainable ways of living, fostering progress while regenerating the ecosystem.
Lake Atitlán, one of Guatemala’s most vital freshwater sources, is under threat. Most wastewater remains untreated, putting community health, livelihoods, and ecosystems at risk.
- Over 80% of wastewater remains untreated
- More than 20% of the population suffers from waterborne illnesses
- Rural communities face the greatest barriers to safe water and sanitation
Lake Atitlán is far more than a water source, it is sacred, deeply intertwined with culture, identity, and way of life.
Since 2019, we have worked alongside Indigenous communities to expand access to safe water through filtration, education, and women-led initiatives. Today, we are advancing integrated WASH solutions, combining sanitation, decentralized wastewater treatment, and nature-based systems to reduce contamination at its source.
Our work connects water, health, and environmental protection to build long-term, community-driven solutions for a changing climate.
We envision a world where resilient communities live in harmony with nature and protect all water resources, providing universal access to clean water and ensuring sustainability for future generations.
Pillars
Ecosystem Regeneration
Agua Sana Atitlán is a community-driven initiative committed to addressing the urgent challenges of environmental degradation and water pollution in Lake Atitlán. We use nature-based, low-tech water treatment systems that intercept and purify contaminated water from upstream sources. In addition, we organize regular trash collection campaigns to keep plastic waste and other pollutants from entering the lake.
Women's Empowerment
We believe in empowering the local community to take ownership of our projects. Our program, “Bienestar Comunitario”, bringing access to clean drinking water, health and environmental education, is led by local women. Each year, we host a leadership training to share tools, provide educational support, and set together strategic priorities for addressing water-related challenges in different communities.
Clean Drinking Water
We distribute Village Water Filters (VF100) to 50+ different indigenous and native communities in Guatemala. The .1 micron filtration unit is a gravity fed system, with a simple backflush cleaning method, making it an easy to adopt technology. To plan deliveries, we work with health centers, schools and local municipal leaders to determine which areas lack support and access to clean potable water.
Education & Collective Action
Dropping off a product and walking away is not our style. Proper education about the filter, maintenance, process and purpose is what we focus on. With each delivery, we include an in-depth demonstration and education portion that is spoken in their native dialect. We share sustainable practices that are relevant for the communities and give workshops about key topics such as waste management, natural products, diet and much more, inviting them to take actions that will have a direct positive impact.
